Footie pajamas have been a popular Christmas gift for decades. There’s just something about them that harkens to childhood. They evoke memories of carefree days and conjure up feelings of comfort and security. It’s no wonder that they top the list of popular holiday gifts, even for grown-ups!
PJ’s themselves date back to at least the 17th century. Numerous cultures have claimed responsibility for their “invention.” In fact, night clothes have been around for thousands of years in some form or another. After all, everyone needs something to wear to bed, and wearing one’s good clothing for sleeping has never been practical.
Pajamas as we know them today probably originated in Persia in the 1600’s. Prior to this, night clothes were mainly utilitarian and functional rather than fashionable. Persians were known for their fine taste in fabrics and garments. It’s little surprise that they were probably the first culture to apply fashion concepts to night wear.
They soon became popular, first in Britain and then in other developed countries like the United States. A typical man’s garment for sleeping consisted of loose fitting pants and a matching, loose-fitting top. This style is still highly popular today, both with men and women as well as children.
Over the years, the night-time garment branched out in many directions. Nightgowns became popular with women, and at times during history even men wore “night dresses.” Today, of course, consumers can find shorts, t-shirts and tank-top style PJ’s in addition to the traditional pants-and-shirt styles.
Footie pajamas were born in the late 1800’s. They were originally designed and marketed as sleepwear for babies. They were sometimes referred to as “blanket sleepers.” This is because they were intended to provide babies with the comfort and warmth of a blanket.
They were (and still are) much safer for babies than blankets for sleep time. It’s a well-known fact among parents that blankets and babies are a bad mix. Blankets can lead to strangulation and suffocation accidents and possibly result in infant death. At best, they rarely stay on baby for more than a few hours.
Footie pajamas solved the problem of keeping infants warm at night without posing the hazards of a blanket. They are still recommended today for infants and babies, not just for sleeping but for daywear as well.
Footie pajamas soon became so endeared that companies began to manufacture them for older children too. Eventually even adults could purchase them. Few things offer the level of both physical and emotional night time comfort than a pair of footie pajamas.
Infant footed PJ’s are hot sellers year-round. However, Christmas is the biggest time of year for retailers of footie pajamas for kids and adults. Kids Christmas pajamas in footed varieties top wish lists when it comes to nightwear. In fact, kids Christmas pajamas of all different styles (footed or otherwise) are always popular for holiday giving to children.
PJ’s make some of the best Christmas gifts because they are highly practical. Everyone needs them, because everyone wears them. That doesn’t mean that kids Christmas pajamas have to be utilitarian and boring.
If you’re buying for the children in your life, you can choose bright colors and unique and exclusive designs. Choosing something fun makes the gift memorable and exciting in addition to being practical.
Purchasing footie pajamas can sometimes be tricky. Footie pajamas (sleepers) for babies need to fit snugly but not tightly in order to ensure baby’s safety. If you are unsure about sizing, purchase a garment that’s on the large side so that baby can grow into them.
Older children can safely wear footie pajamas that are a little bit on the big side, especially if they are gathered at the ankle. The legs should not be so long that the foot-portion drags on the floor, though, as this can cause accidents.
