Anthony napping at age 5

How much sleep does your child need?   This is a question that I am sure every parent wonders about from time to time or maybe all the time.  Especially when you bring home your first baby from the hospital.    The nurses and doctors really don’t tell you anything.  In fact, if you talk to the day nurse and then talk to the night nurse, I am sure you would get two different ideas about how much your baby should sleep 🙂

So to save every new mother time, I have done the research for you on how much a baby should sleep.  I have broken it down by age for you.    I searched books and the internet and basically all the information I found was the same for a good sleeping baby.   Which is what we all want, right?

One Month old: Babies one month old should sleep 8 1/2 hours of nighttime sleep, 7 hours of daytime sleep (broken into 3 naps) for a total of 15 1/2 hours of sleep a day.

Three Months old: Babies that are three months old should sleep about 10 hours at night and 5 daytime hours ( broken into 3 naps) for a total of 15 hours of sleep a day.

Six Months old: Babies at six months old should be sleeping great for you through the night with a total of 11 hours of nighttime sleep.  They should be sleeping about 3 1/2 hours during the day (broken into two naps, but some babies at this age just might need a 3rd nap for about 45 minutes,  both of my boys needed this 3rd nap).  This brings the total sleep for the day at 14 1/4 to 15 hours of sleep a day.

Nine Months old:  Babies at 9 months old should be sleeping about 11 hours at night.  Their daytime sleep should be around 3 hours of sleep (broken into 2 naps).  Their total for the day is around 14 hours of sleep.

12 Months old: At one year old a baby should sleep around 11 1/2 hours at night.  During the day, they should be sleeping 2 1/2 hours (broken into 2 naps).  I know a lot of babies move to one nap at this age.  If they do it should be one long nap.  Their total amount of sleep for the whole day should be around 13 3/4 to 14 hours.

18 Months old: At 18 months old a baby should sleep around the same as a one year old but will most likely be napping only once a day.

2 Years old: Oh, the terrible twos!  I personally thought the 3’s were so much worse than the 2’s but maybe that was just my boys.  Anyway, a 2 year old should sleep at least 13 to 13 1/2 hours a day with one nap being about 2 hours.

Remember this is just a guideline and some babies might sleep a little more or maybe a little less.  I am not a sleep expert but I do know my boys behaved so much better when they had their sleep and were wearing  comfortable pajamas.   My Baby Pajamas has a great selection of baby pajamas and toddler pajamas, including one of our best selling brands At Home Pajamas.
