Since My Baby Pajamas is going to start blogging about sleep and our children, I decided to do some more research online and I came across something very interesting, Top Baby Sleep Myths. It’s a list about the most common misconceptions and sleeping babies. I know we all have fallen in the trap to some of them or maybe all of them. I mean we are only human and sometimes parents try anything to get and keep their baby to sleep. Here are a couple of my favorite:
Myth #4 : Rice cereal before bedtime will help my baby sleep longer. Hunger is typically not the cause of sleep problems after 3 to 4 months of age. I know for a fact that my husband and I tried this one with our youngest son. He was tongue-tied and had a hard time sucking from a bottle. He would get tired trying to suck and could not finish his bottle. So at around 11 or 12 weeks old we tried putting rice cereal in his bottle. It didn’t help at all! What helped was getting his tongue released (a small cut the doctor makes under his tongue) which they did around 4 months of age.
Myth # 6: It’s easier to sleep-trian an older baby. The longer a habit is reinforced, the harder it is to break. Habits are hard to break no matter who you are or how old you are. Most adults have a caffeine habit, we get up in the morning and we say to our kids, “please just let me have a cup of coffee first”. A lot of us are guilty of this one. My husband gets up every morning and turns on the coffee maker before doing anything. I must confess I don’t drink coffee but I have one diet coke a day for my caffeine. If I do not get my caffeine I am not a pleasant person. Just ask anyone in my family. I would love to break this habit but it’s been a on going habit for years. It’s just not happening! Trust me, I have tried. Or maybe I just don’t want to give it up.
Now try to tell a 3 or 4 year old it’s time to start sleeping through the night. It’s going to be a fight. Why not teach them early in life to sleep and enjoy sleep.
